The Animal – Plant Interaction Students' group “APIS” was founded on 9 March 2023 and is the youngest Scientific Club of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology. At present, the Club has 18 members who want to engage in scientific activity and conduct field and laboratory experiments.
Human-induced environmental changes in recent decades have significantly reduced the diversity, density and distribution of pollinators worldwide, leading to a “global pollinator crisis”.
One measure to protect pollinators is to maintain habitats rich in species that provide pollen and nectar. Food (nectar and pollen) shortages for pollinators are a serious problem in today's agricultural as well as urbanised landscapes. Scarcity of food is associated with, among other factors, habitat homogenisation, increasing areas of monocultures, the introduction of highly advanced agricultural technologies, and the concreting of urban spaces.
Main goals and tasks of the Club
We are involved in the organisation of cyclical science-promoting events, e.g. Biologists’ Night, Fascination of Plants Day, Lublin Science Festival, or UMCS Open Doors as well as workshops for children and pupils concerning pollinators and honey. We are happy to integrate students from different years and countries offering a platform to acquire knowledge and skills about plant-animal interactions, to develop scientific interests and passions, and to establish cooperation and friendly relations.
