After the event: Multicultural Days at UMCS Explore South America

Last Friday, on the 28th of February 2020 at 5:00 p.m. the second of four scheduled events under the banner of Multicultural Days at UMCS took place. This time, the name of the event was as follows: Multicultural Days at UMCS - Explore South America (Polish: Ameryka Południowa – kultura i tradycje). The event was a perfect opportunity for students to get familiar with various traditions, cultures and customs of South American Countries. The meeting took place in the Academic Canteen “Trójka”.

The Project Foreigners@UMCS Team would like to give acknowledgment to all guests for coming and taking part in the event, especially Vice-Rectors of UMCS: dr hab. Alina Orłowska, prof. dr hab. Radosław Dobrowolski and dr hab. Arkadiusz Bereza as well as Deans and Vice-eans of UMCS Faculties: prof. dr hab. Anna Deryło-Marczewska, prof. UMCS Piotr Borowski, dr hab. Małgorzata Wójcik, prof. Marek Pietraś, the Director of International Relations Department at UMCS and other lecturers, PhD candidates and UMCS students for coming.

At the beginning of the event, the student of Intercultural Communication in Education and the Workplace from Brazil presented some facts about her country. She introduced participants to facts and myths about the Federative Republic of Brazil. The next stage of the Explore South America Event was devoted to the presentation of Latin American Association at UMCS. All participants had an occasion to learn about the activity and history of the Association.

After two presentations, there was a time for workshops. Two students of Graphic Arts held artistic workshops aiming at preparing  Piñata and paper hair decorations. Piñatas are kinds of colourful paper-made decorations filled with sweets commonly associated with South American countries. The first workshop group decorated Piñata, while the second one was supposed to prepare highly-coloured hair decorations which were later used during dancing workshops. As for dancing workshops itself, students from Brazil taught attendees basic dance steps of their national dances.

Simultaneously with artistic workshops, participants of the event could take an active part in the quiz about Brazil. The UMCS student of International Relations prepared the quiz about his homeland and present attendees could check their knowledge and receive various awards. Thereafter, the student of International Relations from Peru presented how to make traditional Peruvian cuisine Arroz chaufa. After his presentation, all participants had an opportunity to taste delicious Peruvian dish and other snacks from that region of the world.

The Project Foreigners@UMCS Team would particularly like to thank all International Students who take an active part in the preparation of the Multicultural Days at UMCS - Explore South America event.
