The Botanical Garden

The UMCS Botanical Garden was founded in 1965 and opened to the public in 1974, it covers an area of 21.25 ha. From spring to autumn it is visited by 70-80 thousand people - adults, children, schoolchildren and students, individually or in organized groups. Its mission is to conduct activities for the preservation of biodiversity, public natural education, shaping pro-ecological attitudes and promoting the conscious, sustainable use of natural resources.

The Garden gathers plants from various climatic zones and areas of the world, they are grouped in over a dozen thematic sections and collections and counting over 7,000 taxa Among them, there are: 178 species protected according with Polish law, 114 included in the Polish Red Book of Plants, and 211 on the Polish Red List of ferns and flowering plants, 10 species are under international protection (Berne Convention). A large and important group are species covered by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) - over 560 taxa, and about 500 taxa are included in the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species. For over 30 years, engaging in various projects, the UMCS Botanical Garden has been working to protect protected and endangered species of Polish flora, with particular emphasis on the flora of the region.
