Abstract:

Implant related infection is an acute problem, especially for elderly or immunocompromised patients, for whom a second surgery may be particularly detrimental to their health. The Microbial Adhesion Group (AM-UEx) of the University of Extremadura (UEx) works in this field. Its research is focused on the study of bacterial adhesion and formation of biofilms in various biomaterials that can be used for permanent or resorbable implants. This work is carried out in collaboration with other Spanish groups within the framework of CIBER-BBN, a national Network Research Centre in Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine. After a brief presentation of UEx, CIBER-BBN and its NANBIOSIS equipment platform, some recent research done by the AM-UEx group within the framework of this collaborative network will be presented, with special attention to PLA-Mg films.
