In a globalised world, the dominant trend in the development of higher education is its internationalisation, that is the establishment of a global research and educational area in which scientific achievements and the quality of education have become symbols of civilisational attractiveness and modernity.
The internationalisation of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University is therefore a necessity, a challenge, but also an opportunity to improve the quality of research, to contribute to European and global science and to be successful on the international education market.
With this in mind, Maria Curie-Skłodowska University has prepared the Programme for the Internationalisation of Research at UMCS for the years 2020-2024, the implementation of which will support the achievement of the strategic objective of increasing the internationalisation of scientific activities undertaken at Marie Curie-Skłodowska University.
The Programme was developed by the Strategic Team established as part of the implementation of the UMCS Inter-Pro task, which is part of the the “Integrated UMCS” project.
Strategic Team included representatives of faculty authorities, central administration, and was chaired by the Vice-Rector for Science and International Cooperation currently the Rector of UMCS prof. dr hab. Radosław Dobrowolski.

The Team's main tasks were: determining the current state of the international dispresed potential of UMCS, analysis of the UMCS Strategy for 2019-2025 in terms of provisions concerning internationalisation, diagnosis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT analysis), and developing strategic assumptions related to the internationalization of research at UMCS.
After 18 months of meetings, discussions and, above all, hard work, the UMCS Strategic Research Internationalization Program for 2020-2024 was created, a strategic document supplementing the UMCS Strategy for 2019-2025, containing key objectives for increasing the level of the internationalization of research, as well as defined measures which give a clear overwiev of progress.
In June 2020, the document was approved by the UMCS Senate.
The strategic objective of the Programme is to increase the internationalisation of research at UMCS. The goal relates directly to the UMCS Strategy for 2019-2025.
At the tactical level, three more specific operational objectives have been formulated:
Operational objective no. 1: increase international research grant activity
Operational objective no. 2: increase internationalisation of HR potential
Operational objective no. 3: increase the dissemination of research and artistic works abroad and strengthen the image of UMCS in the international arena.
The achievement of the operational objectives listed above requires a variety of actions to be taken at the level of the entire university, i.e. both by the university authorities and individual research institutes, academic staff and UMCS central units.
The implementation of the Strategic Programme for Internationalisation of Research at UMCS for the years 2020-2024 is the responsibility of the Vice-Rector for Science and International Cooperation of UMCS,assisted by the International Cooperation Center, UMCS research institutes and other units.
The activities were implemented as part of the "Integrated UMCS" project co-financed by the European Social Fund under the Operational Program Knowledge Education Development 2014-2020 Axis III. Higher education for economy and development, Measure 3.5 Comprehensive programmes of higher education institutions.
