About the Laboratory

The Higher Education Internationalization Research Laboratory was established by the decision of the Director of the Institute of International Relations at the Faculty of Political Science and Journalism of UMCS in October 2023 to systematize and intensify research in the multidimensional process of internationalization of higher education.

The research conducted in the Laboratory encompasses several main areas:

  • Research on the determinants of the internationalization of higher education. The factors that determine this process are institutional and systemic in nature. Regarding the higher education system in Poland, factors are also examined, divided into internal and external factors.
  • Research on the internationalization of the functions of higher education institutions. The research is conducted in relation to three key functions: scientific research, teaching, promotion, and engagement with the environment. To a significant extent, these studies are conducted in relation to the operation of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University as a case study, which may ultimately contribute to the development of useful diagnoses in the context of supporting the internationalization of the University.
  • Research on the inclusion process of foreigners, understood as a system of activities, solutions, and tools (organizational, administrative, financial, and legal) used by a higher education institution, oriented towards the inclusion of foreigners (foreign students, doctoral students, and employees) in its functioning. The research focuses on the conditions, including normative foundations, stakeholders, and stages of this process. The research subjects include concepts such as the Inclusive University, internationalization "at home", including the analysis of outreach programs, stakeholder groups, and stages of the inclusion process.
  • Research on internationalization processes using data science methods – research on large data sets regarding internationalization, including statistical analysis of data relating to recruitment for English-language studies, English-language doctoral programs, and the outcomes of foreign graduates. Besides its cognitive value, the research also holds practical value in correlation with recruitment campaigns and the implementation of strategies aimed at attracting the best candidates. Research on internationalization processes using data science methods is carried out as part of interdisciplinary cooperation with Hanoi University and IT specialists from the Institute of Computer Science of UMCS.
  • Comparative analysis regarding institutional and systemic solutions in Poland and worldwide in the field of internationalization of higher education. The research subjects include tools for the internationalization of higher education, such as educational programs, various forms of further education, scholarship programs, aid programs, and programs for scientists.

Additional tasks conducted in the Laboratory also include scientific studies and expert opinions, as well as applications for external funds, including intervention grants.
