Personal information

Dr Noemia Bessa Vilela graduated in law from the University of Portucalense in Porto. She defended her doctoral thesis written in English at the faculty of law of Loránd Eötvös University in Budapest. She is the founder and director of the research centre ‘OPHIZ Research’ (Institute for Research and Development of Legal Sciences) based in Maribor, Slovenia. She is active in Portuguese and international scientific associations such as the American Bar Association, the European Law Institute, the Academy of European Law, the Observatory of Human Rights and Amnesty International, among others.

She has lectured as a visiting professor or conducted research at the following universities, among others: University of Maribor; University of Portucalense Infante D. Henrique in Porto (Portugal); University of Tehran; Gujarat University of Technology and Business (India); Autonoma University Madrid (Spain); Global University Oporto (Portugal); Masaryk University, Brno (Czech Republic); Ovidius University of Constanta (Romania); IESEF - Instituto de Estudos Superiores de Fafe, LDA (Portugal); Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil) and Institute for Strategic Studies and Forecasting (Montenegro). 

Dr Noemia Rute Bessa Vilela is the author of dozens of scientific publications, including articles, chapters in monographs and conference proceedings. She has been involved in 11 EU-funded projects with a total value of more than €5 million. She is currently the Action Chair of COST Action CA20123 IGCOORD  ‘Intergovernmental Coordination from Local to European Governance’
