Prof. Katarzyna Chałasińska-Macukow - Rector of the University of Warsaw 2005–2012

A graduate of the Faculty of Physics at the University of Warsaw. In 1988 she received a postdoctoral degree in physical sciences. In 1992 she became an associate professor, and in 1997 a full professor.

She served as Vice-Dean (1995–1996) and Dean (1996–2002) of the Faculty of Physics at the University of Warsaw. In 2002 she was elected Vice-Rector of the University of Warsaw for Financial Affairs and Personnel Policy.

From 2005 to 2012 (for two terms) she was the Rector of the University of Warsaw, becoming the first woman to hold this position in the university’s history. From 2008 to 2012 she was the Chairwoman of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland.

She is a member of numerous scientific societies, including the Warsaw Scientific Society and the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE, USA). During the 2014–2017 term, she was the president of the Polish Physics Society. In 2009 she received an honorary doctorate from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. In 2013 she was also honored with this title by the Precarpathian University in Ivano-Frankivsk.
