Li Xu – Distinguished Professor of Graphic and Interactive Design

The Faculty of Arts at UMCS informs that in the academic year 2024/2025, Li Xu will be teaching Digital Picture Editing as a Distinguished Professor of Graphic and Interactive Design for master's degree students. The faculty hopes this will enhance students' qualifications and contribute to the internationalization of the professorial staff.

He received a Master of Arts Degree in Visual Arts (visual communication design) from the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, and a Doctor of Fine Arts Degree from Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, Poland. He was awarded a CSC scholarship as a national public visiting scholar for a year of research at the University of Art and Design in Offenbach, Germany, in 2014. He is the Executive Secretary General of the C-IDEA International Educator Association and was Head of the Teaching and Research Section at the Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication (China). He is a Distinguished Professor at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (Poland) and was previously an Academic Leader at the Department of International Education at Hebei Academy of Fine Arts. He has been appointed as a Guest Lecturer at the University of South Australia and is a Master's Advisor and Invited Professor at Shanxi University (China). He is also a Guest Professor at Diploma Fachhochschule Nordhessen / University of Applied Sciences (Germany) and the University of J. E. Purkyně in Ústí nad Labem (Czech Republic).

He has been invited to give lectures and workshops at renowned universities and design institutions in China, Japan, the United States, Denmark, the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Spain, South Korea, Dubai, Ecuador and other countries. These include Pratt Institute (United States), Tyler School of Art, Temple University (United States), Nihon University College of Art, Department of Design (Japan), Design School Kolding (Denmark), Willem de Kooning Academy Rotterdam (Netherlands), Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (Poland), Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design (Germany), Tsinghua University and Renmin University (China), among others.

In recent years, he has been one of the founders and curators of more than 20 large-scale international design exhibitions in China, the United States, Italy, Poland, Russia, Mexico, Iran, South Korea, Estonia, Slovakia, Ukraine and other countries. These include HGDF 2020 Chinese Culture Poster Exhibition, New Form-International Exhibition of Graphic Exploration, the 1st International Poster Festival of Shenzhen, Poland Five Stars-Chinese Element Design Exhibition and China Printing Design Biennale 2018. He was also the project consultant for the Virtual Biennale Prague 2015-Prague International Art & Design Exhibition.

He has been invited to serve as a jury member for more than 12 international poster festivals and competitions in countries such as China, the United States, France, Italy, Poland, Germany, Russia, India, Slovakia, Latvia, South Korea and the Czech Republic. These include the 24th China Patent Award, the 3rd Germany Bunde Biennale, the 2nd International Poster Stellars Competition 2021 (United States), the 11th Poster Triennial Trnava 2022 (Slovakia), Latvian Designers' Society Award 2018, the Italy A'Design Award, and India's Best Design Award 2023. He was the chief designer of the poster for the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, in 2010. He has received several important awards, including the IF Design Award, The First Prize of AIGA (RE)Design Awards 2011, The Gold Prize of IDA International Design Awards 2012, the Bronze Award of Pentawards 2012, the London Creative Awards 2011, the Achievement Award of Dubai Poster Festival, The Nomination Prize of 11th and 12th National Exhibition of Fine Arts China, and the Honorary Prize of Olympic Fine Arts 2008.

Furthermore, his works have been published on the Openlap platform at the New York City College of Technology as excellent teaching cases. He has been selected to exhibit his works at many important biennial and triennial exhibitions. His solo design exhibitions have been held in various prestigious venues, including China Guan Shanyue Gallery, Germany Bunde Museum, Colombia Alliance Francaise Bucaramanga of Senghor Gallery, Italy Palazzo Birago, Russia Museum of Moscow, Poland CSK Gallery, Australia Adelaide Kerry Packer Civic Gallery, Dubai Design Week 2018, Canada George Brown College Gallery, Ecuador Jose Joaquin Museum and South Korea Seoul Iang Gallery. He has also been invited to showcase his works in more than 30 international exhibitions in important venues such as the Danish Cultural Center, Hungary Munkacsy Mihaly Museum, South Korea Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Israel Museum on the Seam, Finland Lahti Art Museum, Hong Kong Heritage Museum, USA Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, Germany DCKD Gallery, and Japan Tokyo GGG Gallery. Several art galleries and poster museums have permanently collected his works.

Additionally, he has chaired high-level research projects and obtained copyright in computer and app software registered by the State Copyright Administration. He has published numerous academic papers and works in professional journals and magazines, such as "ZhuangShi", "Packaging Engineering", "Film Review" and "Design". He has also authored several books, including "Hidden Graphics", "Creative Idea and Activity Planning", "Chinese Characters Visual Practice Exploration", and "Chinese Character Creative Idea and 3D Printing". He has been interviewed by "PRINT", "Art and Design", "PosterPoster", CCTV-China Central Television SHPD Channel and Poland TVP TV, among others.
