Prof. Matthew McCartney, is an an Associate Professor in the Political Economy and Human Development of South Asia at the School of Global and Area Studies, University of Oxford, UK. Macro-economist with focus on political-economy and international development. Affiliated with SOAS, London as a Lecturer in the Economic Development of South Asia. Since 2011  Director of the South Asia Programme at Oxford Univ. Visiting lecturer in South Korea, India, Pakistan, Denmark, China, Poland, and Japan; expert working with the UNDP, USAid, World Bank and EU in Zambia, Botswana, Bangladesh, Georgia, Egypt and Bosnia. His research interests include the role of the state and late industrialisation looking int. al. at the distinction between the proximate (investment, population, productivity) and deeper determinants (institutions, culture, geography, history and openness) of economic growth in the context of the world economy over the last five hundred years in his books on India (2009) and Pakistan (2011) Economic Growth and Development: A Comparative Introduction (2015) Recent writings include co-edited volume (with Liz Chatterjee) looking at the impact of Pranab Bardhans 1984 book on the Political Economy of Development in India (published by Oxford University Press).
