dr Dimitrios Giannakoudakis

O sobie

  Dr. Dimitrios A. Giannakoudakis graduated as chemist from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) in Greece, where he obtained also two M.Sc. degrees (1.Physical Chemistry & Electrochemistry, 2. New Educational Technologies). He received his Ph.D. degree at the City University of New York (CUNY) with full scholarship at the sub-disciple of “Nanotechnology and Materials Chemistry” in 2017. In addition, he obtained scholarship during his PhD studies from Onassis foundation. Then, he continued as a postdoctoral researcher and adjunct tutor at the City College of New York (CCNY), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), and Institute of Physical Chemistry of Polish Academy of Sciences (IChF) in Warsaw. Afterwards, he served at IChF as adj. Assistant Professor and tutor of “Modern Topics in Physical Chemistry” (1. Nanomaterials Science and 2. Principles for novel nature-inspired (nano)technologies). During CoVid pandemic he moved to AUTh as research associate.  

  DG is included in the 2% top world most influential scientists for the single years 2021 and 2022 based on the Stanford University ranking list and he is elected vice-chair at the European Chemistry Society (EuChemS)division of Physical Chemistry / 2023-2025.

  Up-to-day, he has co-authored more than 125 research and review articles in leading journals (average IF as first or last author above 13) that are cited more than 4500 times, 1 monograph, 6 edited books, 17 book chapters, 4 invention patents, with his work to be presented for more than 100 times in conferences. He is on the Editorial Boards of the journals Molecular Catalysis (Elsevier), Carbon Research (Springer), and Sustainable Chemistry (MDPI), he guest-edited more than 20 special issueswhile he acted as invited reviewer for more than 40 scientific journals.

His research interest focuses on photo/thermo/sono-catalysis (solely or in combination) in diverse biomass valorization, environmental, and energy applications and on design, functionalization, and physicochemical features characterization of nano-engineered materials/nanocomposites. The main fields of scientific activity include:

Design, development, and physicochemical characterization of composite (nano)Materials based on:

  • metal (hydro)oxides
  • metal-organic frameworks (MOFs and ZIFs)
  • activated (nano)porous carbons
  • biomass derived (bio)chars
  • graphene and chemically modified derivatives
  • nanostructured graphitic carbon nitride
  • carbon textiles

Main fields of applications

Environmental remediation Technologies:

  • water and wastewater treatment/purification by catalytic and adsorptive methods
  • removal and/or degradation of toxic compounds (war gases, H2S, SOx) in gas phase
  • adsorptive and/or catalytic technologies for desulfurization of liquid or gaseous fuels

Green & sustanable biomass valorization Technologies:

  • biomass valorization towards production of value-added chemicals based on photo and ultrasound catalysis of ultimate low environmental footprint
  • (micro)plastics conversion to chemicals and remediation media
  • adsorptive and/or catalytic desulfurization of liquid fuels

Design and development of protection media such as:

  • “smart” porous multi-functional textiles by decoration of nanocomposites
  • materials for detection of (toxic) gases
