You are cordially invited to a meeting with Yvonne Weekes (Montserrat / Barbados). Dr Weekes is a Caribbean writer, theatre arts educator, and an academic. Her creative career spans poetry, prose, dramatic monologues, stage performances, and film.
Hosted by Edyta Frelik (American Studies) and Bartosz Wójcik (Applied Linguistics), the meeting will feature a conversation with our guest, a presentation of her literary output, and a screening of a fragment of "Newton Unsilenced: Narratives Imagined" (2023). It will focus on Black Atlantic and Caribbean art and literature, followed by Q and A.
Born in London to Montserratian parents, Yvonne Weekes grew up in both London and Montserrat. She started her teaching career in London and moved to Montserrat in 1987, where she started the Rainbow Theatre Company. The group performed in Trinidad, Nevis, Montserrat, and St. Thomas. She was also Montserrat's first Director of Culture. In 1996, she moved to Barbados after the volcanic eruption which forced many Montserratians out of the island. In Barbados she became the Coordinator of the Associate Degree in Theatre and was responsible for redesigning its curriculum. In 2014, she joined the University of the West Indies at the Cave Hill Campus as a lecturer in Theatre.
