Wordstruck

“Wordstruck: American Artists as Readers, Writers and Literati,” May 13–16, 2015 Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, Lublin, Poland - organized with the generous grant from the Terra Foundation for American Art
For many American artists—as diverse as Washington Allston, Marsden Hartley, Ad Reinhardt, Robert Motherwell, and John Cage—writing was an essential art-making procedure, connected to other creative practices. By considering both artistic and utilitarian writings of American painters, this three-day symposium offers a literary perspective on the contribution of artists’ philosophical and aesthetic thought to the development of American culture and society. Organizers aim to challenge one stereotype that artists do not create new ideas but merely interpret, in visual form, those of others.

The entire symposium included 13 sessions: six keynote lectures and 26 shorter presentations by scholars from Poland, Ukraine, Slovakia, Austria, Germany, France, Greece, Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada.

"WORDSTRUCK" was accompanied by "FEEDBACK" - an art exhibition of works which resound with inspirations, fascinations, and affinities with American art. “Feedback” is an attempt to trace American motifs and influences mainly in works by painters, as the most important contributions by American artists have been made in this field.

The artists included in this show were: Krzysztof Bartnik, Jakub Ciężki, Mariusz Drzewiński, Piotr Korol, Donat Kowalski, Robert Kuśmirowski, Marek Mazanowski, Artur Popek, Kamil Stańczak, Krzysztof Szymanowicz, Sławomir Toman, Anna Waszczuk, and Tomasz Zawadzki.

The show was curated by Sławomir Toman. Opening: May 13 (noon), Art/Media Incubator at “Chatka Żaka” – foyer.
