State of Soils in Europe: Key Challenges and Conservation Strategies

We are pleased to announce that Prof. Jean Poesen (Department of Geology, Soil Science, and Geoinformation, UMCS) contributed to the development of the report "The State of Soils in Europe", published by the European Commission. This document offers a comprehensive analysis of soil conditions in 32 Member States of the European Environment Agency (EEA) and six cooperating countries, including the Western Balkans, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom.

The report delves into the intricate interplay between natural and anthropogenic factors that influence soil degradation processes. It addresses key challenges associated with protecting this vital resource, emphasizing its fundamental importance for agriculture, water quality, biodiversity, ecosystem resilience, and human health. The report's key findings include:

  • Interactions and impacts: The report examines the complex relationships between human activities and natural processes that jointly shape soil degradation dynamics and their consequences.
  • Effects of soil degradation: It highlights the impacts of phenomena such as erosion, loss of organic matter, and contamination on agriculture, ecosystems, water resources, biodiversity, and human health.
  • The importance of citizen science: The role of public engagement in soil monitoring and conservation initiatives is emphasized, demonstrating the value of involving communities in efforts to promote sustainable management.
  • Policy significance: The report underscores the need to implement effective soil management strategies, supported by scientific research, innovation, and comprehensive monitoring systems.

Prof. Jean Poesen, a globally recognized expert in geomorphology and environmental conservation, brought his extensive research experience to the report, focusing on soil erosion and geomorphological processes. His contributions to developing innovative soil protection solutions are invaluable.

The report emphasizes the urgent need to establish sustainable management systems to safeguard soil health and ensure the long-term resilience of European ecosystems.
