Rector's Message to the Academic Community

Ladies and gentlemen,

When Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February, we woke up to a new reality. We became witnesses of events that until then we had only known from history books. In the first hours, apart from disbelief and fear, we were accompanied by a sense of powerlessness. Among our students and doctoral students there are many people from Ukraine, so we could not remain indifferent. This initial helplessness quickly turned into a desire to help.

We did not have to wait long for the effects of our joint efforts. We provided our Ukrainian students, doctoral students and their families with various forms of support as part of the 'Maria Curie-Skłodowska University - Together for Ukraine' campaign. As a first step, a Plenipotentiary of the Rector for Assistance to Ukraine was appointed, as well as a special team composed of representatives of the University. More than 350 volunteers from the UMCS academic community also declared their willingness to help, supporting the activities of the university and various municipal and provincial institutions.

UMCS also quickly launched a collection point for donations and fundraiser to provide help to people who were fleeing flee their country. So far the first donations collected have been dispatched from "Trójka" Academic Canteen, and the amount of money collected in the online campaign is growing on a day by day basis.

Moreover, we were the first in Lublin to initiate the procedure of applying for financial aid for Ukrainian students and to enable the option of lowering tuition fees. We also went ahead to provide psychological and legal support to our students and their families in cooperation with the Chamber of Legal Advisors, and the Center of Polish Language and Culture for Polish Community and Foreigners started to offer free Polish language courses for refugees.

Besides all our other efforts, we were aware that we had more possibilities of support, so we made available one of our student dormitories, where many people fleeing war have found shelter. In Chatka Żaka, a special "Common Space" was created, where activities and animations for children and their caregivers take place, so that they can forget about the current terrifying reality, at least for a while. These activities take place in cooperation with the Center for Eastern Europe and the Center for Physical Culture.

The scale of the University's assistance is enormous and is still growing, so it is impossible to mention all the initiatives and on. However, I take this opportunity to thank the academic community for the / your active participation in all forms of support and for the heart you have shown. I am proud that in the face of such a difficult situation we have managed to unite and do the impossible. At the same time, I ask you not to stop, because help in every form will be needed for a long time to come. We should all be aware that support for the Ukrainian people will be of a long-term nature. It is difficult to predict how long the armed conflict behind the eastern border will last, but even in the event of a quick peace, the reconstruction of Ukraine requires a long perspective.

Therefore, I would like to appeal to all members of the academic community to maintain and continue to be mindful of this call for help and its dynamism, at the same time spreading hope and focusing on long-term support for our eastern neighbours.

Шановні Пані та Панове,

коли Росія вторглася в Україну 24 лютого, ми прокинулися у новій реальності. Ми стали мимовільними свідками подій, які досі знали лише з підручників історії. У перші години, окрім недовіри та страху, нас супроводжувало відчуття безсилля.

Серед наших студентів та аспірантів багато людей з України, тому ми не могли залишитися байдужими. Ця початкова безпорадність швидко переросла в бажання допомогти.

На результати спільних дій довго чекати не довелося. . Одразу ми призначили уповноваженого ректора з питань допомоги Україні та спеціальну команнду. З боку академічної спільноти UMTS понад 350 волонтерів також заявили про свою готовність допомогти, підтримуючи таким чином діяльність університетів та різних муніципальних та провінційних установ.

Ми дуже швидко запустили збір гуманітарної допомоги та коштів, щоб надати реальну допомогу явдмуто. Поки що з студентської їдальні «Three» вже відправилися перші партії гуманітарної допомоги, а кількість грошей, накопичених на онлайн-збірці, зростає з кожним днем.

Ми першими в Любліні запустили процедуру подання заявки на допомогу українським студентам та надядулив. Ми також надаємо нашим студентам та їхнім родинам психологічну та юридичну підтримку у співпраці з палатою юристів, а центр польської мови та культури для польської діаспори та іноземців пропонує безкоштовний курс польської мови для біженців.

Ми усвідомлювали, що у нас є більше можливостей для підтримки, тому ми зробили доступним один із наших гуртожитків, де багато людей, які тікали від війни, знайшли притулок. У Shack Zak, навпаки, створено особливий "Спільний простір», в якому проводяться заходи для дітей та їхніх опікунів, щоб вони хоча б на мить забули про жахливу реальність. Ці заходи відбуваються у співпраці з Центром Східної Європи та Центром фізичної культури.

Щиро дякуємо за активну участь у всіх формах підтримки та за ваше відкрите серце. Я пишаюся тим, що в такій складній ситуації нам вдалося об'єднатися і здійснити неможливе. Водночас прошу продовжувати свою діяльність, адже допомога у будь-якій формі знадобиться ще. Ми всі повинні усвідомлювати, що підтримка українського народу буде довготривалою. Важко передбачити, скільки триватиме збройний конфлікт за східним кордоном, але навіть у разі швидкого миру відбудова України потребує довготривалої перспективи.

Тому я закликаю всіх членів академічної спільноти підтримувати цей прекрасний заклик про допомогу та його динамізм, водночас поширюючи наші сили та зосереджуючи увагу на довгостроковій підтримці наших східних сусідів.
