Professor Karen Donders as a laureate of Award of the dr. Karol Jakubowicz
The latest book by prof. Karen Donders (VTR, Belgium), titled "Public Service Media and the Law: Theory and Practice in Europe" (Routledge, 2021), received this year's dr. Karol Jakubowicz award.
The winner of the 4th edition of the dr. Karol Jakubowicz became prof. Karen Donders (VRT, Belgium) for the monograph entitled Public Service Media and the Law: Theory and Practice in Europe (Routledge, 2021). The Award Committee decided to award this year's distinction due to the emphasis in the winning publication on the role of public media in modern democracies. In particular, for boldly examining the differences between the theory and practice of public media in Europe.
Professor Karen Donders is director of public affairs at the public broadcaster in Flanders, Vlaamse Radio- en Televisieomroeporganisatie (VRT). Before joining VRT, she worked as a professor at Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium. Her previous publications include numerous monographs, collective publications and scientific articles on European media policy and innovation in public media.
Dr Karol Jakubowicz (1941–2013) was one of the most recognized media freedom experts in Europe and one of the most recognized Polish researchers in communication and media. The award in his name, affiliated with the Polish Society for Social Communication, was established by Małgorzata Semil-Jakubowicz in 2018. It is awarded for outstanding scientific works that fit into the Patron of the Award area, i.e. research on democracy, human rights, media policy, journalistic ethics, and public media. Six publications by researchers from Belgium, Croatia, Poland, the USA, Hungary and Great Britain have been nominated for this year's edition of the Award. The chairman of the Award Committee is prof. Dr hab. Iwona Hofman from the Institute of Social Communication and Media Sciences at MCSU.
