We are pleased to announce the publication of an article in CATENA that reflects on the 50-year history and development of this prestigious, interdisciplinary journal dedicated to research in geomorphology, soil science, and hydrology. Prof. Dr. Jean Poesen (Department of Geology, Soil Science, and Geoinformatics, UMCS), a distinguished expert in geomorphology and soil conservation, is a co-author of this publication. Cammeraat E., Poesen J., Rohdenburg M., Stahr K., Rigby D., 2024. On the origins and development of Catena: Reflecting 50 years of interdisciplinary publishing. Catena, 240, 108397. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.catena.2024.108397 The article, "On the origins and development of Catena: Reflecting 50 years of interdisciplinary publishing," celebrates Catena’s 50th anniversary by detailing the journal’s history and impact on interdisciplinary research in geomorphology, soil science, and hydrology. Launched in the 1970s, Catena filled a unique niche, addressing the need for interdisciplinary studies of Earth surface processes. Initially publishing about 20 articles per year, the journal now publishes around 800, with contributions from authors worldwide, including a large representation from China. The article highlights how Catena’s focus has evolved. Originally centered on soil erosion and organic matter, the journal now covers broader topics, such as soil quality and climate change. The increasing number of submissions, the need for more reviewers, and the impact of artificial intelligence on publishing processes remain challenges. Despite these, Catena continues to be a leading journal, playing a critical role in interdisciplinary environmental research. |
