This article presents the results of a comprehensive geological and paleoecological study of the Mazovian Interglacial paleolakes (Holsteinian, correlated with Marine Isotope Stage 11c) discovered in the Sosnowicka Depression and Parczewsko-Kodeńska Plateau in Western Polesie. The study proved that the interglacial sediments are not covered by glacial deposits, suggesting that the area was not covered by the extent of the Saalian glacial ice sheet (MIS 6). These sediments occur beneath lake and peat deposits from the early Liviecian (MIS 11b) or clastic and peat deposits from the upper Vistulian (MIS 2). Above this are Holocene sediments. Therefore, the glacial sediments that form the Parczewsko-Kodeńska Plateau were deposited during the Sanian 2 glaciation (Elsterian, MIS 12), and not during the Saalian glaciation (MIS 6), as previously thought. In addition, the formation of paleolakes began at the end of the Sanian 2 glaciation and continued through the Mazovian interglacial (MIS 11c), with some lakes existing until the early Liviecian (MIS 11b). The described paleolakes were part of the extensive lake system of the Mazovian interglacial, extending from the southern part of Podlasie to the northern part of Western Polesia. Comprehensive analyses indicate that the last ice sheet to cover Western Polesie was that of the Sanian 2 glaciation. |
