PECSRL 2024 - summary

From September 9–15, 2024, the 30th edition of the international scientific conference, the Permanent European Conference for the Study of the Rural Landscape, took place. It was organized by the Institute of Socio-Economic Geography and Spatial Management at UMCS.

During the first two days in Lublin and the final two days in Zamość, keynote speeches were delivered by prominent scholars: Prof. Marc Antrop (University of Ghent, Belgium), Prof. Anssi Paasi (University of Oulu, Finland), Prof. Jussi Laine (University of Eastern Finland, Finland), Prof. Raili Nugin (University of Tallinn, Estonia), and Prof. Wojciech Janicki (UMCS Lublin).

Representatives from over 50 international academic institutions, as well as various international organizations, including UNESCO, delivered 85 presentations. The conference also included lectures, workshops, and presentations of the Lublin scientific center, as well as the cities of Lublin and Zamość.

An important part of the conference was the third day, during which three study tours were conducted in the border regions of the Lubelskie and Podkarpackie Voivodeships, in the Roztocze region.

The main goal of the conference was to present and exchange current research results, achievements, and experiences among scientists and practitioners dealing with landscape studies, as well as social, cultural, political, and economic processes occurring in border regions.

This interdisciplinary conference brought together geographers, historians, landscape architects, archaeologists, ethnographers, ecologists, urban planners, landscape planners, and representatives of other disciplines interested in European landscapes. A total of 98 participants from 24 countries and five continents (USA, Chile, Egypt, Japan, and EU countries) took part.

After the sessions in Zamość, some participants joined the post-conference tour "The Multicultural Borderland," which concluded on September 15.
