PECSRL 2024 coming this September!

From September 9 to 15, 2024, Lublin, Zamość, and the Roztocze region will host the 30th Jubilee International Scientific Conference "The Permanent European Conference for the Study of the Rural Landscape" (PECSRL 2024).

This biennial event is organized in various European countries. This edition marks the second time it will be held in Poland, the first being in Warsaw in 1975. The current organizer is the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University – Institute of Socio-Economic Geography and Spatial Management, Faculty of Earth Sciences and Spatial Management.

The conference theme, "Borderscapes – Past and Future" focuses on the complex and dynamic social, cultural, political, and economic processes occurring in the landscapes of border regions. This topic is particularly relevant given the contemporary geopolitical situation.

The main goal of the conference is to present and exchange the latest research results, achievements, and experiences among scientists and practitioners involved in landscape studies and the social, cultural, political, and economic processes in border regions. This interdisciplinary conference brings together scholars from various fields: geographers, historians, archaeologists, ethnographers, ecologists, planners, and representatives of various international institutions, including UNESCO.

The conference spans five days, followed by a two-day post-conference excursion. The first two days in Lublin and the last two in Zamość will feature lectures, workshops, and presentations of the Lublin scientific community. A significant part of the conference is the third day, which includes study tours in the border areas of the Lubelskie and Podkarpackie Voivodeships. These tours will provide PECSRL 2024 participants with insights into the history and current state of the Polish-Ukrainian borderlands, as well as the main attractions of the region.

Researchers from most European countries and several non-European countries (including Chile, Japan, Canada, and the USA) have registered to attend. Over 100 presentations and posters have been submitted. Plenary sessions will feature prominent scholars such as Professor Marc Antrop (Ghent University, Belgium), Professor Anssi Paasi (University of Oulu, Finland), Professor Jussi Laine (University of Eastern Finland, Finland), and Professor Raili Nugin (Tallinn University, Estonia).

The conference is one of the events celebrating the 80th anniversary of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University.
