The 230th anniversary of the enactments of the May 3rd Constitution is approaching - the first in Europe and the second in the world written basic law regulating the organization of state authorities and the rights and obligations of citizens. It is a special time for all Poles and people connected with our country.
- In October 1788, the Seym met in Warsaw, which went down in history under the name of "Four Years" because of its long duration or "Great" because of the reforms that were carried out on it - explains prof. Dariusz Kupisz from the Department of History of the 16th -19th centuries and Eastern Europe from the Institute of History at MCSU. - Russia withdrew troops from Poland. In this way, for the first time in almost a quarter of a century, Russian soldiers were not stationed in Warsaw, and the envoy of Katarzyna II lost his driving power. The Tsarina also agreed to convene the Polish Sejm (...). In an atmosphere of a certain euphoria that it would be possible to debate without pressure from the troops and the Russian ambassador, the meetings began, he says.
