On 13 and 14 June 2023, the XXXI Polar Expedition of the UMCS to Spitsbergen set off, which will continue until early September. The participants will be:
- Dr hab. Piotr Zagórski, Prof. UMCS (expedition leader) - Institute of Earth and Environmental Sciences, UMCS
- Dr Sara Lehmann-Konera - ECOTECH-COMPLEX UMCS
- Dr hab. Paweł Mergo, PhD, Prof. UMCS - Laboratory of Fibre Optics Technology, Faculty of Chemistry, UMCS
- Dr Adam Paździor - Laboratory of Optical Fibre Technology, Faculty of Chemistry, UMCS
- and three students of Geoinformatics II ° UMCS: Maja Potęga, Michał Jarocki, Adrian Szałkowski.
The main objectives of the expedition will be to carry out the research tasks of two projects:
- Autonomous system of a fibre-optic quasi distributed temperature sensor for measuring ground temperature (SPILOD) (No. POIR.04.01.01-00-0031/19).This is a continuation of the work started in the summer of 2022, when a system for distributed ground temperature measurement was installed near the UMCS Polar Station in Calypsobyen PROJECT WEBSITE
- Cryosphere Integrated Observatory Network on Svalbard (CRIOS). The project is funded by an EEA grant under the Basic Research programme. It focuses mainly on the construction of an automated measurement network of Svalbard's cryosphere (permafrost, snow, glaciers), which will provide fresh weather, snow and ice data via satellite communications (for the first time in the history of our Station) PROJECT WEBSITE
