XXI INQUA Congress with reports on NCN grants

XXI INQUA Congress begins today (i.e. 13 July 2023) in Rome. Its main organisers are the University of Rome "La Sapienza" and INQUA (International Union for Quaternary Research). More than 4,000 specialists in Quaternary geology and related disciplines, representing 102 countries, have confirmed their participation in the congress. The congress will last until 21 July.

The following members from our Institute will participate in the congress: Prof. Dr. hab. Maria Łanczont, Prof. Dr. hab. Irena A. Pidek and Dr hab. Przemysław Mroczek, who will present the following speeches:

  • Further challenges for Pleistocene palaeogeography of the Middle Dnieper basin recorded in loess-glacial sediments - Maria Łanczont, Przemysław Mroczek, Maryna Komar, Jerzy Nawrocki, Karol Standzikowski, Oleksii Krokhmal, Kateryna Derevska, Sergii Prylypko, Beata Hołub;
  • Palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the LGM period in the Upper Dnieper basin (Ukraine) based on multi-proxy analysis of the youngest loesses - Przemysław Mroczek, Maria Łanczont, Maryna Komar, Jerzy Nawrocki, Karol Standzikowski, Oleksii Krokhmal, Kateryna Derevska, Sergii Prylypko;
  • New pollen-based evidence on climate oscillation during the mesocratic phase of the Eemian in Central Poland (Garwolin Plain) - Irena Agnieszka Pidek, Anna Hrynowiecka, Marcin Żarski;
  • Proxy-based quantitative reconstructions of Eemian climate, Garwolin Plain (Central Poland) - Anneli Poska, Irena Pidek, Aleksandra Bober.

The topics of the above-mentioned presentations are related to the scientific research carried out within the framework of two NCN grants carried out at our Institute:

  • OPUS 14: Middle Eemian climatic oscillations. Reconstruction based on multidisciplinary studies of fossil lake sediments of the Garwolin Plain (Central Poland) PROJECT PAGE
  • OPUS 16: Global, regional and local factors determining the palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental record in Ukrainian loess-soil sequences along the Dnieper valley - from proximal to distal areas of the periglacial zone PROJECT PAGE

In addition, during the congeries the results of the research on the Quaternary studies in Central Europe, which is being carried out by the members of our Institute, will be presented, including, among others, the revealing results of the latest geoarchaeological research:

  • Middle Dniester canyon as a refugium for Gravettian communities - case study: Doroshivtsi III site (Western Ukraine) - Maria Łanczont, Przemysław Mroczek, Larissa Kulakovska, Olesia Kononenko, Dariusz Bobak, Marta Połtowicz-Bobak, Karol Standzikowski, Vitaly Usik, Laëtitia Demay, Adam Nadachowski, Anna Lemanik;
  • Residual soil sequence (MIS 5 - MIS1) on a thin loess mantle at the Upper Palaeolithic site Dzbańce 21 (northern edge of the Moravian Gate, SW Poland) - Przemysław Mroczek, Maria Łanczont, Dariusz Bobak, Marta Połtowicz-Bobak, Karol Standzikowski.
