World Wetlands Day 2023

The slogan of this year's edition "It's time to restore the wetlands"

On February 3 at the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Spatial Management of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (ul. Kraśnicka 2d) the celebration of the World Wetlands Day will take place. This year's 6th edition of the event consists of two parts - popular science and a scientific session.

The popular science part, including lectures, workshops, competitions and exhibitions, is intended primarily for students of secondary schools and all people interested in the subject of wetlands (for schools, registration for the event is required*, after filling the limit of places, it is also possible to participate in the online transmission of the lecture part via the platform teams). We are convinced that in the rich program of lectures, exhibitions, competitions and workshops, each participant will find something for themselves.

The Scientific Committee responsible for the program of the event are outstanding specialists from the Institute of Earth and Environmental Sciences of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, with scientific achievements related to water and peatland areas of eastern Poland.
Among the organizers, apart from employees of the Institute of Earth and Environmental Sciences of the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Spatial Management of UMCS, there are also representatives of other UMCS units (including the Institute of Socio-Economic Geography and Spatial Management, the Institute of Biological Sciences and the UMCS Botanical Garden). Many students, representatives of scientific circles and doctoral students are involved in the event.

The program of the event consists of 3 lectures during which we will find out, among others: what is the relationship between wetlands and climate change, and climate change with the loss of wetlands, what are the benefits of "healthy wetlands", what can be done to restore them to people and nature what activities are carried out in the Polesie National Park to protect its "pearls" - unique species and habitats, and finally what qualities of animate nature can be found in the cross-border Polesie - one of the wildest corners of Europe), workshops, exhibitions and competitions presenting various aspects of wetlands.

13 thematic workshops
Since the main theme of this year's celebrations is restitution, i.e. restoring the function of degraded wetlands, we will devote a lot of attention to this topic during the workshops (including during the workshops "Bóbr - architect of wetlands" and "What to do with this swamp? - design workshops") . However, in order to effectively recreate wetlands, it is worth getting to know their specificity in the micro and macro scale (this will be achieved by, among others, laboratory workshops: "Land and water from the point of view of an ecologist - design your own water and peatbog ecosystem", "Peat under a microscope" or "Unusual properties of soils in wetlands") and also look at them from above (computer workshops "Through the eyes of satellites - using remote sensing sources in the study of wetlands") or read their variability from old and modern maps (this is what the computer workshops "History of wetlands recorded on maps" are devoted to). And both healthy and transformed wetlands will be taken by their ambassador - the crane.

During the sixth edition of the event, visitors will be able to admire the following exhibitions:

"Everything is made of water II" - an exhibition of paintings by dr inż. Małgorzata Gorzel
(Wincenty Pol Academy of Applied Sciences in Lublin)
"In the land of swamps and swamps" - a photographic exhibition prepared by the Lublin Landscape Parks Complex
"A year in the life of a crane" - a photographic exhibition by Sławomir Wróbel
(Poleski National Park)

Contests: During the event, there will also be competitions on knowledge about wetlands (using smartphones) as well as the competition "Wetlands inspire" where, apart from knowledge of wetlands, creativity of participants will be the most important!

The scientific part will be an opportunity to talk with specialists - scientists and practitioners - about current and completed projects as well as the natural values of wetlands, protection of species and habitats, cross-border cooperation or the impact of climate change on the behavior of avifauna.
