World Water Day and World Meteorological Day 2025

Two important dates are observed in the second half of March: 22 March – World Water Day, and 23 March – World Meteorological Day. The history behind establishing both celebrations relates to initiatives aimed at raising awareness of the importance of water, particularly drinking water, as well as ensuring universal access to weather forecasts. World Meteorological Day commemorates the convention establishing the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1950. World Water Day was established by the United Nations in 1992 under Agenda 21, a programme adopted at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro.

This year's celebrations will involve staff from the Institute of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS) in Lublin, the UMCS Botanical Garden, and the State Water Holding "Wody Polskie" – Regional Water Management Authority in Lublin.

On Thursday, 20 March, we invite you to a lecture by Dr Kamil Leziak from the University of Warsaw entitled "How digital maps help study climate and bioclimate?". The event will be held at 17:15 in the Auditorium of the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Spatial Management, UMCS (Al. Kraśnicka 2d, first floor). The lecture is part of a series organised by the Lublin Branch of the Polish Geographical Society and the Polish Geophysical Society.

Following the lecture, there will be a premiere of the film "Springs of the Lublin Region – an Underestimated Natural Phenomenon", highlighting the significance of these hydrographic features for both nature and humanity, through the lens of research conducted by the Department of Hydrology and Climatology, UMCS. The film was co-funded by the Ministry of Education and Science under the programme "Excellent Science II – Support for Scientific Conferences" (further information: https://www.umcs.pl/pl/v-konferencja-krenologiczna,25522.htm).

On Friday, 21 March, field workshops for secondary school students entitled "Water and Weather Day" will be held at the UMCS Botanical Garden. Staff from the Department of Hydrology and Climatology (UMCS) will introduce methods for hydrological and meteorological measurements and discuss issues related to rainwater management. Representatives from the Regional Water Management Authority in Lublin will also participate, providing insights into water management issues. The visit to the Botanical Garden will also offer an excellent opportunity to look for the first signs of spring with the help of garden staff. The workshop coordinator is Dr Joanna Sposób.

These workshops are organised as part of the INTERREG NEXT Poland – Ukraine 2021-2027 programme, under the project "Water-saving solutions to mitigate climate change effects" (INTERREG WATERGARDENS), funded by the European Union. The project is carried out in cooperation between Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin (Botanical Garden and Department of Hydrology and Climatology, Institute of Earth and Environmental Sciences) and Uzhhorod National University.

More information about the lecture can be found on the OL PTG website.
