On May 27, at the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Spatial Management, laboratory workshops in geography were held for students of Zespół Szkół im. gen. J. Kustronia in Lubaczów as part of the project "Increase in the quality of general education in schools in the Lubaczów District"
The workshops were conducted by scientists from the Institute of Geosciences and Environmental Sciences at UMCS.
The first part of the event was the welcome of the guests by the Vice Director of the Institute of Geosciences and the Environment, prof. dr hab. Irena A. Pidek with the leaders. Then, it was divided into groups of 11-12 people. Students under the supervision of teachers had the opportunity to participate in four types of classes:
• "The beauty of rocks in the microscope" - mineralogical and petrographic workshops, conducted by dr. Eng. Miłosz Huber, during which you could learn how to prepare and observe minerals and rocks using macroscopic and microscopic techniques,
• "Scientific journeys - Arctic" - nature workshops led by Dr. Łukasz Franczak. These workshops were designed to familiarize participants with the conditions of the natural environment of the Arctic and familiarize them with the specificity of scientific research conducted there,
• "Research with the use of drones - low-ceiling remote sensing" - remote sensing workshops that showed how to recognize field objects in satellite and aerial photos, combined with a field game based on an orthophotomap. The classes were conducted by Dr. Marcin Siluch,
• "Soil research" - soil science workshops. These were practical classes in the recognition of soil types, analyzes and experiments in a chemical laboratory, as well as soil painting. The lecturer was dr hab. Jacek Chodorowski, prof. UMCS.
The participants of the classes were very interested in the workshops that gave them the opportunity to gain new knowledge in a practical way. They enabled contact with scientists, work in laboratories, and the use of specialized equipment and professional software. A nice touch was the dinner waiting for the participants in one of the Faculty's rooms and a set of promotional gadgets for each of the guests.
