Lake microbiome and trophy fluctuations of the ancient hemp rettery. Sci. Rep. 12, 8846. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-022-12761-w Lake sediments are not only a source of long-term ecological information based on pollen spectra and plant macrofossils, but also a source of sed DNA (sedimentary DNA). The publication presents a new approach to the problem of changes in the trophy of the small Słone Lake (Pagóry Chełmskie), the diversity of bacterial communities and metabolism over the last 2000 years, in response to the hemp retting in this reservoir. Hemp retting is a key step in fiber production and has historically been carried out on a large scale in small water bodies with a strong negative impact on these ecosystems. Traditional palaeolimnology techniques and shotgun sequencing of sed DNA were used in the study of the Słone Lake sediments. Two distinct episodes of intense hemp retting in the late Roman period and in the Early Middle Ages have been identified. The manifestations of the degradation of the lake ecosystem were recorded with an increase in trophic conditions and disturbance of the balance of the lake microbiome. Metagenomic analyzes showed an increase in trophism and symptoms of anaerobic metabolism, including degradation of complex biopolymers (pectin and cellulose) during episodes of intensified hemp retting. Thus, the reservoir eutrophication had allochthonous sources. |
