We are pleased to inform you that the scientific article "New concept of permafrost degradation monitoring based on photonics technologies: Case study from Calypsostranda (Bellsund, Svalbard)" published in the journal Land Degradation & Development has been nominated for the international Frontiers Planet Prize. Among the authors are two employees of our Institute – Dr. hab. Piotr Zagórski, Prof. UMCS and Prof. Dr. hab. Radosław Dobrowolski (Department of Geomorphology and Paleogeography). This article presents an innovative approach to monitoring the degradation of permafrost using photonics technologies. The case study focuses on the Calypsostranda area in Bellsund, Svalbard. This work is one of the three selected by the Polish Academy of Sciences as part of the Polish selection for the contest, which promotes research for environmental protection, solving problems related to climate change, and improving living conditions on Earth. The winners of the contest will receive one million Swiss francs for further research development. The winners will be announced on April 22, on Earth Day. |
