We are pleased to announce another joint publication of Prof. dr. Jean Poesen (Department of Geology, Soil Science and Geoinformation UMCS) published in the latest issue of the Earth Surface Processes and Landforms :
Frankl A., Nyssen J., Vanmaercke M., Poesen J., 2021. Gully prevention and control: Techniques, failures and effectiveness. Earth Surf. Process. Landforms, https://doi.org/10.1002/esp.5033.
In this article, the main aim is to present solutions to prevent the development of gully erosion processes. It discusses the types of technical measures to prevent the formation of gullies through changes in land use, appropriate use of soils and management of water resources. In addition, strategies for action to reduce erosion are presented, especially in areas of arable land and ephemeral gullies. The conclusions highlight the role of restored vegetation, described by the authors as linear oases and hotspots of biodiversity and carbon sequestration.
