Geosites in Education: A Study from the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship

We are pleased to inform that the latest issue of the "Resources" journal has published an article on the role of geosites in school education, exemplified by the Global Geopark UNESCO Góry Świętokrzyskie. The leading author of this article is Prof. Dr. Hab. Wojciech Zgłobicki (Department of Geology, Soil Science, and Geoinformation, UMCS):

Zgłobicki W., Nowak I., Baran-Zgłobicka B., Głuszek A., 2024. The Use of Geosites in Education—A Case Study in Central Poland. Resources 13, 1, 15. https://doi.org/10.3390/resources13010015

One of the important ways to promote the value of geoheritage is the use of geosites in school education. Particularly useful for this purpose are nature reserves, where interesting geological and geomorphological sites are located. The Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship area is one of the most geologically interesting regions in Poland. In 2021, the Global Geopark UNESCO Góry Świętokrzyskie was established here. The main goal of the research was to determine the level of knowledge of school youth about geosites and their potential for use in geotourism and education. A variety of geoheritage objects were selected to assess their geotouristic values in inanimate nature reserves. An assessment of their geotouristic values was also conducted. The problem of knowledge and perception of Earth's heritage was examined through a survey conducted among high school students in the city of Starachowice. The results showed that despite the presence of objects with high values, unique at the national and European level, they are rarely visited by students and even less frequently used in formal education (field classes). On the other hand, students declare that the values of geoheritage can be considered as important tourist attractions. Researchers in the field of geoeducation and geotourism should place greater emphasis on disseminating this knowledge among teachers and the public. The creation of a geopark will certainly be an opportunity for the development of geoeducation.
