UMCS for the charges of the Day Adaptation Centre for Children and Young People with Intellectual Disabilities [Dzienny Ośrodek Adaptacyjny dla Dzieci i Młodzieży z Niepełnosprawnością Intelektualną]

Ladies and gentleman,

Members of the academic community of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin,

The community of our Alma Mater has repeatedly become involved in various charitable activities. This year, we decided to support the charges of the Day Adaptation Centre for Children and Young People with Intellectual Disabilities, located at 1 Poturzyńska Street in Lublin.

The main aim of the centre, which has been in operation since 1988, is to support families by providing comprehensive revalidation and specialised care for their children with disabilities. The centre helps children and young people with Down's syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, epilepsy, hearing impairment, blindness and atypical congenital genetic disorders, such as Aicardi syndrome. There are currently 26 charges at the centre, ranging in age from five to 26 years.

The Day Adaptation Center [DOA] carries out its tasks during the daytime stay of children and young people. The centre's staff use elements of various methods in their work, including: the Veronica Sherborne developmental movement, the morning circle, activity and communication programmes according to the Knills. They also use alternative and assistive communication AAC. The wards are provided with residential and nursing services, specialised psychological care and therapy, as well as therapeutic rehabilitation and music therapy.

However, the centre's staff make no secret of the fact that they need help. They often lack the basic resources to work and operate the facility.

The most needed are the following:

  • chemicals
  • toilet paper
  • kitchen paper
  • tissues (in “pull-out” boxes)
  • disposable gloves
  • stain remover, bleach
  • hand and surface disinfectants
  • liquid soap
  • disposable liners

Materials for occupational therapy:

  • A3 and A4 white and coloured blocks (drawing and technical)
  • decorative paper (glitter)
  • double-sided adhesive tapes
  • fixing compounds
  • colourful reliefs
  • decorative punches
  • scissors
  • magic glues
  • large-format bristol
  • decorative materials (e.g. sequins, beads, glitter, pompoms)
  • coloured ribbons and decorative strings
  • essential oils for scented fireplaces
  • tealight holders (unscented candles for the fireplaces)

We encourage members of our academic community: employees, students, doctoral students, graduates, as well as friends and supporters of the University to support the Day Adaptation Centre by bringing the products listed above.

Donations can be brought to the building of the vice-chancellor’s office of UMCS [Rektorat UMCS] (5 Maria Curie-Skłodowska Square). Special wicker baskets have been set up on the ground floor for the products.

The collection will last until 19 December. Afterwards, all donations will be packed up and, as Christmas parcels, will be delivered on 21 December to Dau Adaptation Centre [DOA] residents in need and their families.

Ladies and Gentleman,

we have proved several times that as a community we can join forces to act for a good cause. Therefore, let us together help the centre's charges and put a smile on their faces!

The collection is being coordinated by the teams of the UMCS Promotion Centre [Centrum Promocji] and Press Centre [Centrum Prasowe].
