UMCS Chemistry Faculty Launches BIOMAT Project

On December 2, 2024, the Faculty of Chemistry at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS) officially launched an international educational project titled “Improving Teaching Competencies in the Design of New Generation Biomaterials from Wood Waste” (BIOMAT). This initiative, funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ program for higher education partnerships (KA220-HED), has a budget of €120,000.

Project Kickoff Meeting

The inaugural meeting was held online via the UMCS Virtual Campus platform. It brought together Faculty of Chemistry staff, representatives from the International Student Office Office, and partners from the international partner institutions. Among the distinguished attendees were:

  • Prof. Dr. hab. Dorota Kołodyńska, Vice-Rector for Students and Quality of Education.
  • Dr. hab. Beata Cristóvao, Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry.

Both congratulated the team on securing funding, encouraged collaboration with international partners, and pledged their support throughout the project’s implementation.

Leadership and Team Members

The project is led by Prof. Dr. hab. Beata Podkościelna (Department of Polymer Chemistry) and Dr. hab. Monika Wawrzkiewicz (Department of Inorganic Chemistry). The team includes:

  • Dr. Anna Wołowicz
  • Dr. Marta Goliszek-Chabros
  • Dr. Przemysław Podkościelny
  • Dr. Łukasz Szajnecki

UMCS is the project leader, partnering with:

  • The Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (Sweden), coordinated by Dr. Olena Sevastyanova.
  • St. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje (Macedonia), coordinated by Prof. Jadranka Blazhevska-Gilev.

From the administrative side of the project implementation, the suport is provided by Karolina Sokolińska, Patrycja Kuryś, and Oleksandr Shtanhret from the International Student Office of UMCS.

Project Goals

The BIOMAT project aims to:

  1. Advance knowledge in managing waste from the pulp and paper industry.
  2. Develop innovative biomaterials for environmental applications.
  3. Promote cooperation between partner institutions in Poland, Sweden, and Macedonia.
  4. Foster environmental awareness and sustainability through educational programs.
  5. Create innovative teaching materials for university and secondary school students.
  6. Enhance virtual collaboration and improve accessibility to international mobility through study visits.
