We are pleased to inform you that the statue of our University's patroness, Maria Curie-Skłodowska, has been entered in the register of monuments in the Lublin Voivodeship. The statue, located in the heart of the university campus, is an important point on the map of Lublin for both the academic community and all its residents. The statue of the scientist is almost 4.5-meter high sculpture cast in bronze, placed on a two-part pedestal in the central part of the square named after her. The development of the monument was initiated by the Rector of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University at the time Professor Grzegorz L. Seidler (1959-1969), and created by the renowned sculptor Marian Konieczny. The unveiling of the statue took place in 1964 and was the culmination of the solemn celebration of the 20th anniversary of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, also it coincided with the 30th anniversary of the Nobel Prize winner's death. In her right hand she is holding a book, while her sleeves are rolled up. The statue is inscribed with dedications, on the pedestal at the front: "Maria Curie-Skłodowska university in her memory", and on the back: "On the 20th anniversary of the foundation of the university 1944-1964". Furthermore, the monument underwent renovations that were completed at the end of June 2020. The works focused primarily on the pedestal, which was strengthened and secured, while the statue of Maria Curie-Skłodowska itself underwent conservation and protection works. |
