History

The Chair of Plant Physiology was created when the University was founded in 1944. Prof. Bronisław Niklewski was the organiser and first Head of the Chair. In 1970, the Chair was transformed into the Department of Plant Physiology. In 1945–1974, prof. dr hab. Adam Paszewski was in charge of the Chair and later the Department of Plant Physiology. In 1974-1997, the Department was headed by prof. dr hab. Tadeusz Baszyński. He was succeeded by prof. dr hab. Zbigniew Krupa (1997-2009), dr hab. Waldemar Maksymiec (2009-2014), prof. dr hab. Anna Tukiendorf (2014-2016), and dr hab. Małgorzata Wójcik (2016-2019).
In 1995, the Department of Biophysics became a separate unit. It was coordinated by prof. dr hab. Tadeusz Zawadzki (1995-2006) and prof. dr hab. Kazimierz Trębacz (2006-2019).

In 2019, the Department of Plant Physiology and the Department of Biophysics merged into the Department of Plant Physiology and Biophysics headed by prof. dr hab. Kazimierz Trębacz.
